There are probably very few feelings to rival that of waking up after a good night’s sleep. Ironically, this is just a dream for some. Most of us in fact, are ridiculously sleep deprived and we do not seem to be doing very much about it unfortunately. Perhaps the fact that severe lack of sleep is very bad for you should make you sit up and take notice. So if you have been passing more than a few nights lying in wakefulness, then you need to get moving. Many are quick to cite work pressures, stress, family issues and other problems as causes; however, for some this means a sleep disorder is in effect. Sleep disorders are disruptive and cause immense strain to your body which is why you need to understand them first. Here is a quick look.

Insomnia

Movies, books and even songs have come out of this sleep disorder, portraying it in a sometime too light-hearted a-manner. Insomnia happens to be one of the most widespread sleep disorders in the world and affects a majority of young people. In the 21st century, this is only worsening thanks to our addiction to technology. Late night jaunts on social media, gaming and at times aimless surfing into the early hours of dawn are popular causes. It leads to a vicious cycle since people often end up lying awake at night worrying about it and then do not fall asleep anyway. There could be many reasons for insomnia, and you need to see a doctor.

Sleep Apnea

Those with light snoring are often contenders for this very serious sleep disorder. Sleep apnea is linked to breathing problems which are obviously alarming. People who suffer from sleep apnea suffer a lot, having to wake up numerous times through the night due to a lack of breath. Often, this is because there is some constriction in the airway that prevents air from flowing as normal. There are many different options to treat sleep apnea, although what is best for you can only be determined by a professional. There are, however, products on the market designed to help battle this such as a night shift sleep positioner.

Narcolepsy

Narcolepsy is one of the most irritating forms of sleep disorders if it must be ranked because it is so unpredictable. It has everything to do with irregular sleep patterns caused by problems with REM sleep. This means that unlike people who fall asleep normally, narcoleptics skip the regular sleep cycle and enter REM early. This disrupts the entire system, causing them to often fall asleep sometimes, even in the middle of an activity. These sudden sleep spells can last just a minute or at times hours on end. It depends from person to person.

What Can You Do?

Whether you or someone you know suffers from any type of sleep disorder, it goes without saying that professional help is mandatory. In fact, it is not an option to not seek it. Aside from causing irritability, mood changes and a host of other mental problems, it also takes a toll on your physically. Your body cannot function as it normally does when it has not gotten the rest it needs and soon your weight starts ballooning, and you begin to experience other difficulties. Just as much as work and family are important, so is your health; even more so. So if you suspect a sleep disorder, do yourself a favor and put it right.
